To close the loop on this: after I noticed that FD had made the mortgage offer out in the wrong names (!!) they issued a corrected offer document. This took about ten days to produce vs the four days for the first one. Anyway, the new document has the right names on it and moreover contains none of the text about conveyancing and legal fees that led me to start this thread.
So as of today, everything is as I had expected it to be in the first place. What a relief! Thanks to anyone who replied here or even thought about it
