Before the tories sold them off.
We all paid the same price per unit......
We had large stockpiles of gas ... remember all those gas towers?
And utility managememt didnt give themselves bonuses in the millions....Actually Diurnal storage*Pumped up overnight and gas released over the day. Very expensive to maintain (mostly victorian !) and replaced with "line pack" where pipes underground were oversized and pressured up to hold the gas that used to be in holders.
* although they were at the lowest pressure tier of course.....3
