Job offer

  • Yes, I vaguely remember doing my DBS online as previously I think it had all been paperbased. I have 4 referees who have agreed to be a referee to cover the past 3 years (3 referees from one previous workplace and my employer previous to that).

In which case, sign back in and check nothing has changed and the new employer will be able access so much more quickly.

It's well worth doing, especially when you want clearance quickly due to your current employer.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....
  • Cheers. I tried to do this but the time has elapsed between being issued a DBS which was over 2 years ago. I have the certificate number of my DBS certificate but it does not seem to recognise it. Thanks for posting the link though as I didn't know there was the ability to be able to do this.

Yes, this is what I am trying to do is to be prepared. My current employer can also give one weeks notice so you're right it may well be that when the request for a reference comes their way (obviously I will speak to them first about this) they will give me a weeks notice and I'll be gone sitting waiting for my checks to go through 😅. Not great but can just about manage financially in the interim hopefully but I don't want to turn down this job offer based on the above.

I would have had a DBS done a few years ago and occupational health clearance should all still be OK.

I guess the other concern is if my current employer decides not to do a reference which will leave me in a sticky situation...jobless almost!
Unlikely, but it is possible. Except in a few regulated professions an employer cannot be compelled to provide a reference.

And yes, they could issue you with a week's notice at any point in your first two years and there would be nothing you could do about it unless you could show the real reason amounted to unlawful discrimination (e.g race, gender etc). Should that happen (unlikely) there is no practical means of forcing them to give a reason. Indeed, if they took legal advice they would probably be advised not to give a reason!
  • I think realistically speaking I'm going to have to turn this job offer down. The way I see it is my current manager is going to be furious as he already knows I was previously offered another job during my short time with them. Secondly, if they do refuse to provide a reference based on this and the nhs aren't happy with this (irrespective of what they have said) I am left jobless with no blooming reference. I'm not sure in the current climate it is worth the risk of all this. Thoughts anyone?

Only you can know how likely (or otherwise) that is.

Are you thinking of staying put until you cross the "magic" two years? That doesn't stop any of this from happening, all it may mean is that you could get some financial compensation. However, if the employer has a mind to be difficult and is not totally stupid that may be far harder work or less certain than you perhaps imagine.

All of this is speculation about what might happen. It is unusual for employers to behave like this. Presumably your job would still need doing so if they push you out of the door in a week who is going to do it whilst they try and recruit somebody else?
  • Of course it's speculation. I work amongst a large team so one member down will not make a great deal seeing as they have just recruited a few more to the team.

I guess in the next 24 hours I need to decide whether to have the 'chat' or turn down the offer and wait a while.

I'd personally take the job. You are turning down a job you want for something you don't even know will happen.

  • If it was me, and the new opportunity is a good one, then I would have the chat but include something along the lines of ‘it will take some time to arrange pre-employment checks with my new employer so I’m happy to be flexible with my notice and my start date in order to ensure my work is covered- my new employer has suggested a start date of ‘X’.
I guess there is a risk that they may give you notice but if you have a good relationship with your manager then I can’t see why they would do this.
But you will only know this once you have that conversation. And most new jobs will take more than 1 week from offer to start date so I would expect this to happen again in the future so you may as well do this now.

  • Thanks both. I've received my offer letter through and the request with all the required documents which will be no problem providing etc. They will start contacting references but my current employer isn't down as a reference but they are down as my current employer. I think will wait till recruitment contact me for their contact details before I have the chat. All seems terribly dishonest though and I would actually prefer to be upfront now but i suspect I could 'shoot myself in the foot' by doing so! I've always been in long term employment previously so it's always been expected that I'd hang around till I get a start date and then hand in a month's notice. This time it's a weeks notice. I've been told by recruitment the checks are likely to take approx 6 weeks.
