Iboost v gas cost

Hi,

I am thinking of programing the iboost timer to heat the hot water cyclinder on the Go tarrif at the reduced rate, will that work out cheaper/efficient compared to gas currently?

Thanks

Could be, even highly likely, but we don't know what you are paying. Nor how you use your battery (which I've just noticed whilst typing..).

For the gas I am on the default cap rate. With the battery the PV recharges but expect in the next few months will recharge on the Go tarrif as the days becomes shorter.

Probably if your Go night rate is less 7.5p or less (current gas cap rate is about 7.5p and electricity is 100% efficient whereas gas is only about 90% at best).

Come October when the gas cap price is going to be about 13-15p then it becomes a no brainer.

We have a 4.5p night rate so will set the immersion timer to heat then and the immersion temp to 70-75, problem is tank even at that temp does not meet all our daily needs so will probably put the gas tank stat to about 45 and play with the hours it heats to make sure we always have hot water when we use it but minimise the use of gas as much as possible.
    I think....

With the current cap it is probably slightly cheaper to heat the water with the Go tariff (assuming you are on the 7.5p kWh overnight rate) after accounting for the lower efficiency of gas heating. It won't be a significant difference though.
If you are still on the capped Gas rate in October then it definitely will be cheaper heating the hot water overnight using the timer on the iBoost (assuming no major government intervention).

I currently do this on the occasional days that the solar doesn't heat the tank through the iBoost sufficiently. I am on the Octopus tracker for gas though so with the current wholesale prices the difference is greater than you will have on the capped tariff.

    Hi to all Iboost users,

As the prices of gas has increased I was trying to program the timer on the iboost to set off at 3.30am for an hour to heat the water by import by following the manual however I checked this morning and it did not work. There seems to be  various menus on winter and summer to set different times. Has anyone had experience around setting the timer function or am I missing something.

    Thanks

Press the display button 7 times.
Is it correctly saying "In Summer Boost"/"In Winter Boost" or does it say " Timed Boost Off"?

If the latter press A on that screen to select the right boost programme.
  • It's gonna depend on how much hot water you use from the tank? My hot water is heated from the solar only using the iboost as we are not heavy users. We have no bath (only electric shower) and machines in the kitchen are cold water fill - so only really using hot water for washing up.

@Deleted_User Why heat the tank at all if it's only for washing up? Wouldn't it be simpler to boil what you need in a kettle as you need it?
