Income tax on one off payment?

in Cutting tax
Hi, I am looking for some advice please. I left my job beginning of July and started a new one last week.
In between, a company based in Luxembourg contacted me asking for some advice on a product they were creating, which I was happy to provide (because I have expertise in this particular field). This was basically a video call for and they paid me £500 (which was a very welcome surprise!). I assumed I would need to complete a self assessment tax return for this amount, but someone else said they do paid surveys and don’t get taxed on it as it’s not ‘work’ because there is no contract.
Grateful for any advice - as I said, I’ve always been PAYE so have no idea about such stuff and I don’t want to do the wrong thing.

You might tell your friend that it is 'work' and there is a contract, even if it's only verbal.
All depends on the income she gets from it as to whether tax is due.
One-off or repeating is irrelevant. What matters is whether the income received goes over the trading limit in the relevant tax year.No free lunch, and no free laptop

There's some useful info here about some instances where you cannot claim the training allowance.

As OP's other income is subject to PAYE, the trading allowance, which also applies to casual earnings of this nature, will eliminate any need to report it.Dazed_and_C0nfused said:There's some useful info here about some instances where you cannot claim the training allowance.
