Best bed base for comfort?

Hi guys. Not sure where to post this.

I have 'inherited' a very good and and firm mattress for a single bed and would now like to find a matching base in the sense of one which supports it really well. What type of base would be the one to go for?

there are many places to get a good base 

benson for beds, dreams (I had a bed from them that lasted 11 years) If you want brand new

Hmm.

I’ve having a similar dilemma. I have an absolutely excellent bed, that’s over 20 years old. It’s a “dunlopillo diamond” mattress on a “spring edge” base. It’s basically perfect, but getting rather beaten up to the point of social embarrassment if anyone sees underneath the sheets/valance.

In looking for a replacement - I really just want an identical setup, but dunlopillo have gone bust and been bought out several times and their products have changed, so it’s not simple.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the sprung base on my current bed makes a big difference - especially with my firm latex mattress. I can’t find a new “sprung edge” base for love, nor money, though. Unless I’m missing something, nobody seems to make them any more. I think I’ll have to make do with a hard/firm edged, sprung base when I replace this.

One thing about the mattress/bed industry - it seems they’ve all decided to sell us cheap-to-produce, will-fit-in-a-box-and-can-be-posted junk beds that need to be replaced every few years. As well as being an eco-disaster, I’m sure we all end up spending far more on beds than we used to / need to.

I would call a couple of different bed companies and ask their advice - after all, it is their specialist area of knowledge.

I didn't know that but why am I not surprised? Isn't it ever the same? Unrestrained capitalism has ruined the planet and you get the feeling that, as the UK disappears under 80 metres of melted Antarctica, someone will still be trying to sell us dodgy liferafts...

Yes, but just reading the first result;

“The set is completed with a stylish platform top base which is available to be purchased with a selection of storage facilities and can be completed in numerous fabrics.”

A”platform top base” is just a hard piece of wood. Usually covered in fabric with a bit of foam. No springs at all. Let alone springs all the way to the edge, which I think makes a big difference to the quality.

Don’t be deceived. The entire bed industry is so full of marketing crap that they’ll happily outright lie to you.

I found that buying from the bed chain stores or online type places usually resulted in stuff that didnt last or quickly got uncomfortable. We got our beds from a local independant furniture shop was recommended by colleagues who had lived here for ages, they had the best selection for our needs by far.  See if you can find a local independant shop would be my recommendation.

It is possible to buy the base on it's own from bed / furniture stores but I would recommend going to an independent bed shop as they are more likely to be happy to sell the base on it's own.

Most bed manufactures still make sprung bases, there are a few different types but the most common these days is a firm edge sprung base. This is when the the frame of the base 2'' in is firm (so around the edge of the bed) and then inside the box design you'll find the springs. These are the open-coil springs, which if you like serve as a mini-mattress and put less pressure on the mattress springs as the weight is then shared between both the mattress and the base.

The older sprung edge bases would be completely sprung, edge-to-edge like Daaave has purchased, these days a lot of people didn't like the slight roll-off feel it can give, especially if you have a soft mattress / sleep near the edge of the bed. So some suppliers only do the firm-edge but it would still be better than the platform / solid top.

Obviously it's more expensive to make the base sprung and as a lot of people went for more high quality mattresses less emphasis was put on the needing a sprung base.

Any decent divan will do the job. The mattress is more important than the base as long as the base is the size and can support the mattress.  Spinal Guard mattresses are excellent in my experience. I think a company called King makes them

We're in a similar predicament. Our last new bed (bought when we moved in Dec 2020) is on the brink of collapse already, in fact the wheels on the divan base are already bent! Want to stick with a divan base but they're so flimsy these days if you f*rt wrong they fall apart - it's even worse if you get storage versions!
