Working from Home

I worked from home last year due to an operation in October 2021 for 4 weeks.

Am I able to claim TAX relief on this for 2021/2022 as I worked from home

Also I was told to work from home for one day at the start of the pandemic in March 2020 am I able to claim tax relief on this one day.

AIUI you may be able to claim for 2019/20 as you were TOLD to work from home.  But can't claim for 2020/21 as that appears to be your choice.

  • But the tax relief for 2019:20 is likely to be no more than £2-3.

Before deducting any tax owed (most people on PAYE owe £1-2/year).

People who worked from home during the pandemic were able to claim for the whole tax year, evem if they only worked from home for a day.

Working from Home after an op.. were you signed off sick with a doctor's note ? In which case employer should not have expected you to work from home. Sick is sick. Or, did you work from home without a sick note, in which case, whether your employer was stingy or generous, depends on your sick pay arrangements. If you said that you would work from home, then if you would only have got SSP your emplyer was being generous.

Also, WFH meant that you didn't get a 4 week size blot on your attendance figures.

The time limited easement, which is the mechanism by which you claim for a whole year even if you only met the conditions for one day in the year, operates from 2020/21 to 2022/23. In addition, if you worked from home during a lockdown in a tax year, you met the "required to work from home" condition, so most people who worked from home at some time in in 2020/21 or 2021/22 got relief for the whole year. That did not apply for 2019/20, hence the paltry relief available described by Dazed.

If you meet the conditions during any part of 2022/23, you claim for the whole year. But as there will be no lockdowns in that year (we hope), there has to be some other reason why the nature of your employment requires you to work from home. This is a high bar that is not met simply by having a requirement to work from home in your employment contract. Choosing to work from home, for whatever reason, can never fulfil the conditions.
  • Hi does anyone know if you were to receive a letter from HM Revenue and Customs for claiming for the working from home rebate?  I signed up to the original 2020-2021 and didn't get anything in the post so assumed it had somehow been worked into my PAYE.  Then I recently applied for it under the 2021-2022 and a few days later get a letter out saying I'm owed money and detailing how I can receive it.  So should I have got a letter the first time - the fact I didn't does that mean I didn't get it?  Just curious what anyone elses experiences were before I spend an hour on hold trying to speak to someone!
  • What tax code was on your 2020:21 P60?
  • What tax code was on your 2020:21 P60?
1263L on 2021/22 (this was the one I got the letter regarding them owing me money)
    1288L on 2020/21
    1256L on 2019/20

    for comparison if that helps

  • Most people would be on the emergency tax code of 1257L in 2020/21

    You were on 1288L.

Which is 31 points higher than normal.

Covid-19 WFH expenses for 2020:21 were £312 so tax code 1257L would become 1288L.

It's either an amazing coincidence or you've already had the benefit of it for 2020:21.

My husband is currently working from home most of the time. for an agency. The agency is too far too commute to and doesn't provide office space for managers. The client specified that he should work from home as they don't have the space and in any case, he's visiting 60 sites, supervising contractors. He's waiting to see whether his situation complies with the tougher HMRC rules. If it does, then he would be able to claim some of his heating and lighting costs IIRC.

Great thanks for that - I'd applied but it must have been during that tax year hence no letter to issue a refund as a I assume they altered it so I paid less tax in the remainder of the year - good to know as I was worried I hadn't got it but then worried about applying again in case they thought I was trying to diddle them!
