I completed my HMRC self assessment for 2021/2 and I'm owed quite a large tax refund.

HMRC have adjusted my code for 2022/3 rather than issue a refund.

Any idea how I apply to have the refund paid as a lump sum rather that over the next 12 months

Thanks

  • You are getting confused.

Apart from one niche situation involving small amounts of expenses HMRC never refund tax overpaid for one year via the tax code of a later year.

What they will do is assume certain things included on your Self Assessment return will continue, for example pension contributions and Gift Aid.

Have you checked your Self Assessment statement to see what that shows?

And what has changed in your current tax code?
  • I had Medical insurance paid by my company which stopped 18 month ago.  I only realised I was still being taxed on it this year.  That is the refund I'm after.

Tax refunds are based on what happens in a complete tax year.

So any refund for 2021:22 will be based on your Self Assessment return.  What was the bottom line on your Self Assessment calculation?  Did that show a refund was due?

Any tax code change for 2022:23 is only a provisional correction for 2022:23, it isn't refunding anything for 2021:22.
