eBay Selling

Options
I have been a Member for 10+ years & have been selling my old stuff since around 2018
Ebay has now demanded that I give them either my Passport Details or Driving Licence Details by copying them on to Ebay’s Websight.
Ebay will not allow me to continue with my Selling unless I give them this Photo ID
I have checked with DVLA which states on their Form “Protect Yourself against Identity Theft Your Driving Licence SHOULD NOT BE SHARED, COPIED OR PHOTOGRAPHED.
This surely applies also to Your PASSPORT as it is also Highly Sensitive Information for your Personal Security!
In discussion with EBay by phone they refuse to accept that DVLA recommendation is not to share the License information & therefor will not re-open my account with them, unless I acquiesce tamely to their demands.
I am sure that many Members on EBay must be experiencing the same problems if they will not give up their sensitive information to EBay as it may be “Hacked” in the future. Can EBay really Guarantee keeping our Identity Secure in the future. Surely it relies on each of us to Protect our own Identity if we are to remain safe!
I am posting this today as MSE is promoting EBay Selling on the Websight now. Be aware of what you may be giving up to protect your own Secure Information.

What alternatives are there for sellers without either a passport or driving license?

I would count yourself lucky that ebay actually let you know about these new rules. Companies such as Vinted wait until sellers have build up a sum of money to collect from sales then demand personal ID in order to collect from your sale. They and other selling sites are have been fined for doing this but there is nothing you can do but forget about using them.
It is far to risky to give your photo ID as these companies are based in Eastern Europe or India and will remove money from your account - see reviews of Vinted who have actually done this and got away with it.

Years ago i was asked to do this as a buyer not seller, on the Paypal side of things, i refused to give all those ID documents and my account was suspended.
Many years after that i set up another Ebay/Paypal  account and the scenario never happened again - i thought it was very suspicious, you'd think if it was required once it would be again.

E-bay have an even lower trustpilot score than Vinted with 1.2 from 8,800 reviews compared to 1.3 from 7,100

I've found selling on EBay has been far slower since around February this year. Its very, VERY quiet. I'm finding fewer buyers and fewer viewings. I guess the cost of living has hit people quite hard and there seems less buyers out there than normal.

I have found the exact same thing. It's getting much harder to sell at the moment. Even Gumtree and Marketplace have slowed a bit, with things only moving for extremely low prices.

eBay withheld money from me first and wouldn't release it until I gave ID. I wasn't happy. I preferred the way it used to be done with PayPal
  • I am in a similar position, I signed up for an individual seller account and sold  a few bits of specialist clutter with no problem, I was happy with it but earlier this year ebay asked me to provide the photo ID in order to comply with their  changes. I had not sold anything for a few months and did not have any active listings.
The sales I had made were already completed at that time  and I was not waiting on any pay outs.
I could not have provided what they asked for as I dont have the forms of ID that they wanted.
They keep sending me messages asking for me to comply and send what they have asked for. There is no way of contacting  them. I was thinking of closing my account completely but then I would have no record of my sales for future reference.
I would like to sell a bit more on ebay because not everything is suitable for taking to a charity shop but even if I did have a passport or driving licence I would not want to copy it to ebay.

After years of ebay buying & selling, I am now not able to. When click "List now" pop up demands a code sent to me (never get).
ebay say now it must be a text mobile to enter on screen. No mobile signal here, would need to travel into nearest town to get, &
race back before countdown ends!  In future I will browse goods to buy, then order via the sellers website instead, or Amazon.
Pay pal always shows a code ON SCREEN, click ring, & they call landline proper phone, I enter code shown, easy! Why can't
ebay do same? I could give them a pals mobile No; they could ring me then with code, but why should I, shows how rubbish their
    security system is.

You've signed up for a mobile phone contract where you can't get a signal at home and have to travel to the nearest town to pick up any messages or receive a phone call?

That seems like quite an odd thing to do...
