Squirrelpie and QrizB thank you for your input and my apologies if it looks as if one of you is dragging blood from a stone. If I could clarify, 2 years ago I looked into buying back my pension as I only had according to the HMRC, 8 years. At the time I called HMRC to see how I could buy back years through the voluntary contributions scheme but due to the nature of some of the countries that I had worked in was subsequently advised by HMRC to see if I could apply for the cheaper class contributions. I did this and sent in the relevant form but I am sorry but I do not know what 8 years I had originally contributed to. The reply from HMRC a year later said that I could pay for 3 years for class 3. I then paid for 4 years (3 years class 3 and one year class 2) to hopefully bring me up to 12 years. Once again I have to apologise but the details of these years is not currently at hand because once again I am not in the UK and as all correspondence is by post I do not have the details overseas with me. I am fully aware of the importance of individual years and what I paid but it doesn’t negate the fact that 2 years ago I had 8 years contributions and then paid 4 more voluntarily only to be told today that I only have 9 years having paid only 8.0

Knowing very little about the intricacies of NI records. My guess is you had 8 you acquired 1 more via standard contributions and the 4 you have paid for have not been added to your record or due to an error somewhere deep in the system. Having worked for the DWP it’s probably box 89 on the additional records page that needs a T in it instead of a J.1
