I thought I would share this photo I took earlier this week, of a hornet feeding on Echinops in a Bedfordshire garden.

Hornets can sting painfully but are not particularly aggressive towards humans.  They were being pretty snappy with each other but not one took any notice of me as I took photos.

The one in the picture is a European hornet which are native to Britain and NOT an Asian hornet or any other murderous invasive foreign beastie.  No need to report, kill or call out exterminators.  It was about the size of a large queen wasp, but with a deeper buzz and a chestnut brown vibe to its colouration.

Enjoy!

Great shot! I never seem to get an opportunity like that. :( It's about now I see and hear them, but they rarely land. I agree they're not aggressive towards us and standing still to allow them an inspection is recommended....but not easy to do! :D
