Ive had 3 employers last tax year and made a right pigs ear of my SA

Am I right in thinking that HMRC used to pass details of cumulative earnings and tax to new employers or have I just imagined that?
they haven’t passed it on in either case for me

  • They will do sometimes but it's not always possible or necessary.

Your Self Assessment shouldn't be an issue though as you would usually have P45 or P60 details to help complete.  And occasionally a letter (I think) if you have received a late payment after a P45 has been issued.

    And payslips.

The usual procedure is that you give the new employer these details, they are on the P45 that you get when or shortly after you leave.  Sometimes this does not go smoothly and then HMRC send the details once they are advised that you have started with a new employer.  If you are filling in a self assessment you would fill in details of any employment along with any other details eg self employed income   Perhaps if you gave details of what you have done wrong on you self assessment someone might be able to help there.

In both cases I handed over the P45 (and both employers were keen to have it to avoid emergency tax).

    i made 2 main mistakes.
i completely missed the first employer as it was in April.
in the second case I had to use a payslip that arrived after p45 (overtime).
i used the gross figure rather than the taxable one.
there was a difference because there were shares and medical insurance that went through payroll.

    I’ve amended my SA

i am expecting it to go through automatically, but worse case as I’ve fessed up, a slap on the wrist.

no idea why this happened as I’m usually a detail person.
  • You may not need to do SA. If you're employed by them and it's not a self employment agreement you could call HMRC up and amend your tax code proportional across the three jobs. It might not be 33% for each, if you earn lots more on one, give that a greater proportion, so basically proportion your earnings not to just three ways if that makes sense.

As the OP is doing an SA and has not queried it they are probably supposed to be doing one.
The OP says "In both cases I handed over the P45 " strongly suggesting that the employments were not at the same time so there was no need to allocate tax codes between them during the year and as the year is now over tax will be calculated on total taxable earnings it does not matter how many jobs there were.
