MSE News: Households urgently need more support from the Government with energy bills, MPs warn
The Government must "immediately" update its energy bills support package to provide additional help that is better targeted towards the most vulnerable, a cross-party group of MPs have said in a new report published today.

Absolutely. The market is broken. There will be mass civil unrest without appropriate government action.0

If the government keep giving money to the public to pay these prices then consumption will remain the same and so will prices.2

Giving more and more to people on certain benefits and thus making them batter off than those who fall just the wrong side of the line and get nothing really wouldn't go down well.3

I agree. It was mentioned somewhere 3 or 4weeks ago that a family of 3adults , all working age, and all on benefits , and they were eligible in their own right for almost every extra bit of in the way of cost of living and energy help. There does not appear to be a cap on what a household can claim.spot1034 said:Giving more and more to people on certain benefits and thus making them batter off than those who fall just the wrong side of the line and get nothing really wouldn't go down well.0 -
I made exactly that point over the weekend. We need to pay people to cut back not pay them to keep using.Evan3020 said:If the government keep giving money to the public to pay these prices then consumption will remain the same and so will prices.

The unintended consequence of socialism is that the desire to better yourself is continually diminished. From the looks of this thread, the usually silent majority are starting to wake up.I notice my thread complaining about the BBC suggesting similar subsidies has mysteriously vanished without any explanation that I've seen. Is agreement a requirement of discussion here?0

I wonder how long we are prepared to accept that we have a bunch of private companies, making a profit while adding no value, within a market that has almost no competition or customer choice and regulated prices.Perhaps this was OK for a few months, would a year be OK? Surely there has to come a point when we just admit that the entire system has failed and needs starting again. As the government already regulates the prices and subsidises the cost and is now being asked to do more of both, then why not just treat energy as a public service, run by the government, just like the roads, railways etc etc?0

So far there have been precisely zero payments made to anyone in the UK to specifically help with energy costs, £400 is promised, so we're really not in "keep giving money" territory.Evan3020 said:If the government keep giving money to the public to pay these prices then consumption will remain the same and so will prices.0 -
But this thread is about "additional help" if you keep providing more money you just inflate prices.
Governments just keep providing cheaper money for house buying rather than tackle the supply problem thus inflating house prices.0
