had to laugh at your comment - Also pheasants have no brains so will jump in front of you at every opportunity
I agree they are daft creatures.

As for the OP chickens are fine.  it's the roosters you have to be concerned about.  But if they don't have one, then great. We have one that may be a mile away.  I've never been able to pin down the direction.

the worst I've ever heard about hedgehogs is they can be noisy.  frankly I've never noticed myself despite having a family in our garden a couple of years back.

foxes are the worst in our area. noisy and the have managed to get into our garden and will p00p wherever you want to walk.  Particularly bad this year as there's at least 6 of them.  I expect though it's because I'm in a city, not rural.  Foxes in the wild will be a bit more spaced out.  And even here I've finally spotted a badger walking by at 4 am.  Might have been looking for some water in the recent heat.

But it could be much worse - my mom has to ensure she's not outside in the evening as that's when there's a pack of wolf/coyotes that come by.  Granted it's not in the UK so you should be ok.

We have hedgehogs in our garden all year round. We have a hibernator (which they use to hibernate and also this year to raise babies) and a feeding station and most nights we have at least two and often three or four hedgehogs. The only downside is that they poo rather a lot but it's easy to clear up after them. Plenty of people in our village have chickens and they really don't cause any bother. You get used to them clucking and even crowing. I'd love to have some myself but Mr S isn't keen unfortunately.

If the hedgehogs and the chickens upset you - and you're perfectly entitled to your views on this - then find somewhere which will suit you better. Chickens are likely to attract rats, but then you get rats just about everywhere, anyway. It would be much better to find somewhere without these issues, rather than potentially enter a dispute with a neighbour.

However, if you propose to live anywhere rural, you need to disabuse yourself of the notion that it will be quiet, especially at night. You'd be amazed at how noisy our native wildlife can be!

Similarly, regarding smells - if you're placed anywhere near a farm, there will be smells from muck spreading at certain times of year. I moved from Birmingham to rural Worcestershire many years ago, and the latter was much smellier than the former.

Speaking personally, this doesn't bother me at all, but you're facing a life-changing decision for yourself and it would be good to ensure you make the right choice.

    Good luck!

I agree with others - if the animals are properly cared for then there shouldn't be significant smells or other issues.

I would be more instereste in where / how they dispose of the waste bedding etc - chicken manure is smelly, so if they have a huge much pile near the shared fence that would be more of an issue than the actual sheds.

Hedghogs can snore and can be surprisingly noisy doing so.

As to why they have put the sheds where they have, it makes sense to me that they would site them by a dence or hedge rather than in the middle of the garden, and it may be that access to water pipes or eletricity was easire on the boundary next to a pathway than elsewhere , or that there was originally a garden dhen and they simply repurposed it and then used the same location,.

Why not see if you can arrange to pop round and have a chat? Find out a bit more about how they operate. Offer them a small donatation towards the hog resucue and they'd probably be your friends for life :)

Is there a church nearby? If so, have the locals tried (or are they trying) to get the bells stopped? If not they can be noisy....
