What to do, who to ask

Options
My son aged 44 had went into serious depression over lockdown, became an alcoholic, went into debt - circa £35k - and has now lost is job due to the alcohol.  He has moved home with us and we are dealing with the alcohol problem.  He has no property and a car worth peanuts. He therefore has huge debts and no income or assets - he'll apply for the dole I guess but that's not going to help much.  He spoke to the Citizens Advice who told him to talk to his creditors and buy some time, which he has done but hasn't really heard any more from them as to what to do now.  He now needs advice on a one to one basis as to what options are available to him and the ramifications of each - there's sooooo much on the internet about this it's just confusing - and help him go through the process of bankruptcy or whatever.  Hellllpppppp

He has a number of choices, he could ask them to write off the debts, which is a bit of a long shot, but given his circumstances, it may be worth a letter.

Just ride it out, keep telling them he has no disposable income, no assets and can`t afford payments, they won`t waste money on enforcement action if they know he has none, more than one way to skin a cat.

Bankruptcy, a last resort possibly, but gives a definitive end to the problem, and allows a fresh start all round.

Would stay on credit file for 6 years, and in the archives of the London Gazette forever, but most can live with that.
