Help, I don’t know why I’m paying tax

Hi there, I work part time and earn around £900 per month before tax. I have been paying tax at around £200 on this but thought I get a tax allowance of around £12,000 per year so I’m unsure if why I’m paying it. Money is very tight and I could really do with that back. Please can someone help as I can’t figure out if I pay the tax now and get it back next April or if it is a mistake. The tax office, I just cannot get through to!

How long have you had this job?

If it is fairly recent did you complete a new starter declaration and pass it back to your employer?

What tax code is shown on your payslips?

Do you have any other earnings or taxable pension income of any sort?

Or have you had any earlier in this tax year, including taxable benefits from DWP?

What is your tax code on your payslips?  It seems as though your employer doesn't have the correct tax code for being your only income.  This can happen if the right paperwork doesn't end up in the right place.  You might be able to correct this online https://www.gov.uk/tax-codes

But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

It's been quite a few years since I had to call HMRC but at the time the recommendation was to ring first thing in the morning when the linss open at 8 (or even to try a few minutes before that in case they are open early), I rarely had to wait more than a few minutes to get through doing that.
