my mum is forever having this problem as she keeps pushing something that asks her to set one up which she hasnt done

usually its just a case of saying you dont want to use a passcode which it says underneath the part where it asks for the passcode.    might be worth a look,  sorry not explaining it well as cant remember exactly what it says when she does it

i always take off the fingerprint and passcode options on hers as its easier for her and  she never goes anywhere with it and doesnt have sensitive information

to set up a passcode you normally have to type a code often 4 to 6 digits - I think you would recall doing that. so that may imply it has the old passcode

    Not necessarily.

Many a time my mother has asked me to sort some technology issue out.

I've told her you must've done XYZ. No I haven't she'd say. Yeah but you must've. She wouldn't have it though, maintaining she hadn't done XYZ.

Until you then get to the bottom of it & show her that she clearly must've. Oh maybe I did.

But for that moment in time, she'd pass a lie detector test because she truly believed she hadn't.

Technology comes so easy to some people.
To others they get there with a bit of help.
And others need round the clock supervision.

Thanks for all the suggestions. My dd thought perhaps as it was put back to factory settings it may have been 1234 or 0000, so I tried one of those and now it says iPad unavailable, so I think I will take it into the computer repair shop or have a word with my friend who gave it to me (as he has a pc and thinking about it a son who is a tech whiz and works with them!!) To see if either us or son can work it out as there isn't an ishop anywhere close to here.
Thanks again, I will work my way though all the links when I visit him as I don't have a pc and it must be easier to see than on my phone or a very old temperamental Kindle  :)

There’s no doubt it can be unlocked, so don’t worry!
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

There is no "defaiult" passcode, very early on during the setup process you are asked to set one.

My dgd has had a look on the internet for me, obviously more tech savvy than me, and she has found a couple of websites that show you what to do step by step, so we have noted the sites down and I will go back to friend and see if we can fix it, he has a proper computer (not like me!) Which is needed. So we should be able to fix it.
Thank you for all the help and info you have given me, I really thought I'd 'broken' it, and you all have been so nice to someone who doesn't understand the techhy things, thank you all again and I'm sure I'll be up and running on it very soon  :)

Is this the friend who gave it to you? He'll probably know what to do.  I hope you get it sorted soon, I wouldn't be without my ipad - they're a brilliant bit of kit once you get the hang of them!

Btw, when I had a problem with an old, used iphone I bought off eBay, the Apple support people were really helpful. If your friend can't reset it for you, it's worth a try using the apple support on their web site.
  • You may find the answer on you tube ..
It's amazing the amount of helpful stuff is on there regarding iPads etc
