I've been given an ipad

Yes I've been given an iPad that I'm over the moon about, the friend who gave it to me put it back to factory settings and said it was very easy to set up!!!! Well perhaps it is but I'm not tech savvy at all and I've managed to b@gger it up!!

I set up the fingerprint recognition but now when I switch it on it needs a passcode to open it and I haven't a clue what it is, I've obviously typed something in but haven't realised what I've done :(  , so I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction, as I can't go forwards or back and obviously can't use it. Is it fixable or do I need to take it somewhere to be fixed?
I'm so cross with myself as it's a lovely present, so any help would be really gratefully received.

  • Hi,
don't have an ipad, but think your fingerprint is your passcode.

on a Android device a fingerprint is linked to a passcode. So you will need the passcode after powering ON after a shut down

to set up a passcode you normally have to type a code often 4 to 6 digits - I think you would recall doing that. so that may imply it has the old passcode

I'm not sure if factory settings resets the passcode, but if you are likely to see your friend you might ask her to try with hers then reset using the settings menu

also there is usually quite good help on google for most apple related things (be careful!!)

    This one seems useful

As its already reset you shouldn't worry about resetting it again

If all else fails, take it into an apple store, and they can reset it for you. Is there one nearby?

And, they may need some proof of ownership, so probably best to check first.

The iPad (and iPhone) typically have 4 or 6 digit passcodes and they may periodically ask for them, including after power on or to do an upgrade.
You must've entered a passcode during setup.

Who set up the passcode? Did you do it when setting up the iPad or is it, in fact, a passcode set by the previous user which it has now only just asked for? If the latter then check with the previous owner. If the former I think you mmight have to take it to an Apple store to get in unlocked.

Thanks for all the help. I can't remember setting a passcode up and it was only last night!!! I phoned my friend and got his passcode to put in but it didn't work.
It doesn't seem to want to change pages at all, so I can't go forwards or back.
I will look at the link, thanks mark55man later as I'm just off out and if all else fails I will have to take it somewhere.
Thanks again all, I'll let you know how I get on  :)

@nannygladys You could erase all the content on the ipad and return it to factory settings. This is what your friend will have done before giving it to you.  If you have a PC and can connect your ipad to it, it's quite a simple process.

When you've reset it back to factory settings you can set it up again and this time if you choose a passcode, make sure you have a pen and paper handy to write it down. See if this helps:

    Best of luck.

  • That might work; let's hope it does.

There have been similar cries for help on here where a full reset could only be done in an Apple Store with proof of ownership, which in practical terms for this situation requires your friend to confirm her original ownership with the receipt, and that you now own it.

That’s what I thought would happen. Otherwise, anybody who stole an iPad could get it unlocked in the store.
