I'm told that I should gradually move my pension investments from equities to bonds/gilts. However as there's a war and high inflation etc that feels like buying high and selling low. Surely that's not the right thing to do?

Not sure about your comment ' buying high and selling low' . Both Equities and bonds/gilts have dropped this year.
Whether you should change your allocations depends on many things, such as age, risk profile and your strategy for how you will take your pension. It should not be influenced by current events .There is always a war on somewhere, usually several.0
