GOG thoughts?

Finally got myself a basic laptop for house admin, and realised I could also potentially use it to play some old PC games that I never got a chance to play back in the day because I never had a powerful enough computer. We're talking from the late 90s and early 00s here. I know some people use GOG.com for that sort of stuff, but just wondering what others thought about it, like the library on offer, pricing, frequency of sales, how well the software runs etc?

The problem is that old games may not play on a more modern machine, though many have been upgraded, but constant upgrades from the like of Windows 10 can make the games unplayable again.
I buy lots of games, but prefer modern games and dislike modern games made to look like basic old games, but priced as high as those with well presented solid 3D animations.
I use GOG a lot, but check prices over a few sites as you can't predict which will be cheapest. My sits are Steam, which has the biggest range, GOG who sell modern and old type games (You can tell how well a game runs by reading the forum link with each game page), Epic , who sell a few retro games but give away one or sometimes two games every week with offers changing on Thursdays, CD Keys who have some quite cheap game keys, but same many which are sold out (meaning they probably never had the key as the games are too new) CJS CD Keys , who seem to have less choice but some good bargains and my now favourite Gamivo (who have a rather deceptive website, where you have to switch off the button for their monthly club SMART, our you are charged for it and untick their 'insurance offer, which you don't need. as service is good without it.
Steam, GOG and Epic have regular sales, but you can sometimes beat the prices by looking around before buying. There are quite good games at amazing prices eg I saw one game which was selling for £19 earlier this year, when it was released, having a key on sale for under £5. Figment, only a couple of years old selling for £0.49 on GOG's site.
Some moan that GOG's customer service is bad, but I was very impressed when I bought the third in a series I own on disk and found that the download would not run. A staff member sorted a solution and , when it worked, suggested contacting him again, if I had any problems.
Steam's site is the best for opinions on games as lots of people post there.
GOG, Steam and Epic have a number of permanently available free games too.
and PS If you have an Amazon Prime membership, they give away about 6 games each month and during the recent Prime Days, had over 25 on offer. Some of their games are cheapies but some are less than a year old and/or from big names.0 -
In general, GOG is good value - especially if you're interested in older games. They have also done work to make it so older games will run on modern PCs . I've bought games on GOG that I already had a physical copy, because the old version on the CD/DVD wouldn't work any more whereas the GOG version did.
For recent releases, they're much of a muchness - apart from sales, most of the platforms sell the games for around the same price.0 -
Though my interest in PC gaming is limited, I prefer GOG for the reasons you describe - reliving the glory days of the 90s-early 2000s awesome RPGs and point-and-click adventures. I think they offer the best deals and make it super-easy to run these games on a modern PC. So, GOG gets 5/5 on that front from me!0
