Mince Pie Disaster!!!

I made my mince pies for Christmas last night (they freeze well and can be re-heated quickly as needed) and all have gone!!!

The reason....

Home made mince meat (Delia), Home made rich short crust pastry (Cooks.com - use lemon juice instead of water for a shorter crust!) and my inspired (I think) addition of orange zest to the PASTRY!

Highly recommended - I am now going to make another batch and try crystallised ginger in the pastry! But fisrt I MUST freeze my cheese straws (Hugh FW) before they all go too!

BTW - Squeeze and drink juice from the zested oranges to ward off winter colds!

Bl**dy Hell that's just happened to me today! I made 12 as a tester for the Big Event and they've all dissappeared too! I can't understand it
Need to go and lie down as I feel a bit sick :o

Gotta go as I only have about 3/4 of my cheese straws left!!!
  • Love the idea of adding orange zest to the pastry - inspired indeed! :-)

I also like to soak wafer thin slices of apple (use a veg/potato peeler) in brandy and then put these on top of the mincemeat with a few drops of the brandy before putting the 'lid' on the pie - yum!

  • Last year I used the spare egg whites from the pastry (en richened with the yolks) to make a meringue topping for the mince pies and had snow topped mince pies!:D
