New Tv

We've had our tv in the bedroom, for nearly 10 years now, it was just freeview, with built in DVD player, which more times than not, wouldn't read the disc. This has now failed, so we need a new tv. I don't need the DVD built in, but I would like it to a Smart tv, and able to record to usb stick, which for its age, was a good point for this tv. I want something between 22 and 32 inch. The reasing I'm posting this, is I would really like recommendations, as there are loads to choose from, and we have been let down with 'Smart' tvs before. We had a Toshiba one which came with loads of stuff, put on by Toshiba, but included BBC iPlayer, and YouTube, which we were fine with. Within a couple of months of us buying the tv, both these services were withdrawn, and left the tv with just subscriptions to stuff we'd never heard of, or free movies that I wouldn't give the time of day too.

I have always bought Sony, the previous one lasted 20 years, my parents one is 20 years and still going strong, and our current flat screen tv are both about 10 years old. No problem with any of them except that I think the on/off switch failed on my 20 yo tv, hence I replaced it. If you want a small tv, your options are limited, I had to go for a Samsung 24 inch for the kitchen. However, none of my tv have been Smart.
Edit: 10 years, originally said 20.0 -
Hi, I'm in the position of having to buy a new TV as our old one was damaged - by me, sad to say! It's guaranteed for 6 years as I bought from Richer Sounds and there are a couple of years left to go but the guarantee doesn't cover being dopey and accidentally damaging the set yourself. However, I can claim on insurance, without having to pay any excess, so I've been looking around at what is available. The current TV is Linsar and I have to say that I'd never heard of the make before but we've been really happy with it. John Lewis have a Linsar we could get if we wished but returning to Richer Sounds, they don't have any in stock.
However, after doing a lot of research (a lot), I've decided to go for the Phillips 32PFS6805 (32 inch) from Richer. It's a bit cheaper than the Linsar because I'm a member of their VIP club (so easy to join and beneficial) and it has a headphone socket which we prefer as then can watch TV without disturbing others in the room.
We also have a Toshiba with built in DVD but that's 24 inch, we have had it a long time (it was the predecessor to the Linsar which I recently broke). It's also a bit noisy when there's no DVD in it as well as when there is but we can't hear that buzzing, humming noise when we're actually watching a programme or DVD. I do like the Toshiba picture, though. It's a little small for us to watch in the living room now and it's been in my daughter's bedroom since the Linsar came so she can watch DVDs as and when. I may be wrong but it seems to me that when a TV has a built in DVD player, it's not as efficient.
We thought of getting a 43 inch for the living room but it's a small-ish living room and we prefer not to have a TV dominating the space.
After reading wasty's comment, above, I had a look on the interweb at Sony TVs but although they all look really good, they are a bit too expensive for me.
So I've made my decision now and it's definitely to go with Richer Sounds and the Philips 32 inch. Richer Sounds offer a 6 year guarantee for free and John Lewis offer a 5 year one, also free. I'll be sending my internet order as soon as I come off the MSE Forum site. (Otherwise I'll be faffing around again for another few days!)
I'm not sure whether or not this has been helpful but I hope so. Just my own experiences. I think most TVs these days are pretty good, it just depends which one you really prefer. If you read the reviews, even some makes I've never even heard of get good ones. And if you're not happy of course, both retailers I've mentioned will accept a return. Well, they have to really. In JL's case it's free delivery and return. I'm not sure about Richer, as I've never had to return anything. . . maybe that's another reason I'm going with them.
I hope you find something suitable. I quite enjoyed doing my research at first but now I'm totally fed up with it all! And looking forward to watching my new telly. Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts. We bought one of these Panasonic 24" TV's for our kitchen last year:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08TMS3SWJ
It was so good that we bought the 42" version for the living room as well.
The models have changed. Both of the above were amazing value for money.
We previously purchased one of these for our bedroom:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-TX-24FS500B-Ready-24-Inch-Freeview/dp/B07D2KZL3S
It is better menu operability than we have in the kitchen but rather more expensive.
The above links are Amazon, but Amazon are not always cheapest (prices vary regularly):
- Kitchen TV from Amazon
- Living room TV from Panasonic direct
- Bedroom TV from Curry's
We can't fault any of them0 -
Thanks for all your suggestions guys. I forget about having an headphone socket (essential for the bedroom). Our first tv was a Toshiba, which as I said, turned out to be not so smart. Shows how disposable they are. After 6 months, the screen developed a fault. They sent us a completely new, and different tv, with a similar spec, as the model was no longer made.0

Just another quick question, regarding tv's. Our aerial, has always been in the loft, from when we bought the house, and before digital. We messed around a few times to get a better picture, and now, everything seems perfect. What I would like to know though, should I be getting all the channels advertised a 'Freeview'? I've got a tv guide on my phone, which tells me all the channels I should be getting from the transmitter in my area. Two of these are Forces tv, and London Live, which I have never had. I believe Forces TV is due to finish but, why don't I get them? Is it the tv, or the aerial?
