Company mileage re-claim

In 2020 I decided to buy my own car and took an allowance from my employer (having had a company car for many years).  The company pay me 20p per mile and I claim the remaining 25p…,
now am I right to think I only get 40% of the claim? (HR tax payer)??
this seems incorrect - especially now with high fuel costs.
it’s an actual cost to me - which means currently I am subsidising my company mileage.
I completed the forms for 20/21 back in April and am still awaiting repayment!! Is HMRC usually this slow?
many thanks

  • HMRC don't pay mileage, they give you tax relief (probably worth 10p/mile to you).

If you want 45p/mile then you need to persuade your employer to increase what they pay.

Why is it an actual cost to you?  Why do you think you are subsidising the company mileage?

You receive 20 pence per mile.
You can claim back the income tax on up to 25 pence per mile (reduces to 5 pence per mile).  That is another 10 pence per mile for higher rate tax payer (reduces to 2 pence per mile).
You also receive the monthly car allowance payment from your employer.

Considering all those parts, it should be possible to cover the car costs and business mileage easily.  Even with higher fuel rates.
