Dried corn cobs (corn consumed) also make great fire starters, once fully dry they can keep burning for a while to help start a fire/bbq.
Also second the vote for filled toilet roll tubes, a good way to put a structural starter under firewood/briquettes.0 -

I used to use the newspaper method but havn't has newspaper in our household for years. So we now get https://woodcycle.co.uk/ woodcycle firelighters. They make them from recycled wood and recycled candle wax.0
