I do use fabric softeners but I get an eco version, tallow free and use it sparingly.
I can feel the coating FB leaves on the laundry. Don't know if its hearsay or what (or maybe I've read it on the label) but they can be flammable.
Add to that the plastic / packaging that needs to be recycled and the cost - I really do not like using them!

It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it - that’s what gets results!

point, especially after having to scrub out the fabric-softener induced mould from the drawer of one washing machine. Never used any since.

I am going to buy some white vinegar and try a few drops of essential oils.
I'm also picking up on @London_1 I used to use soda crystals all the time. I will perhaps reintroduce them3 -

Confession - when I first was a student I wasn't sure which bit of the drawer I should put it in. So didn't bother - and didn't really notice a difference.
Never started reusing it (even when I did find out where I should put it). Also I when I lived in halls I had to put all coloureds in a single load in one of those big top loading washing machines so the towels went in the same load. If you put fabric conditioner in they didn't absorb as well.
If you like fabric conditioner then you may want to use it, use it for some loads, use an alternative or not use it at all. It's up to personal preference.
