Putting in a claim
Options
About a month ago, someone I know damaged my parked car. They asked me to get a quote and didn't want to go thru insurance company.
They are now messing me around and I want to put it through the insurance.
As they were going to pay for the damage they admitted they caused, I didn't inform my insurance company as I wasn't putting in a claim.
My insurance ran out today and I'm now insured with a different company (because it was cheaper).
They want my insurance details, should I give them the old details even tho I'm no longer their customer?

Give the third party the insurance at the time of the incident, they'll pass it onto their insurance company who will add it to the database. Then expect problems if you haven't told the new company.0 -
No false declaration was made because I rearranged the new insurance company (to start today) and turned off auto renew for the old company before the accident happened when I went onto a comparison website.
On paperwork from the old insurance company, there is a line saying that they don't need to know about accidents that won't result in putting in a claim. As the person I know didn't want to go thru insurance and they admitted it was their fault, I didn't inform my old insurance company.
Will there still be problems?0 -
Yes if course they did but I couldn't let them know about this damage because it hadn't happened yet. Yes that's right but I went onto a comparison website BEFORE the accident happened about a month ago and organised new insurance to start today.
So when I filled out all the questions (about a month ago) the accident hadn't happened.
I hope in making sense, if not I can write down a timeline with all the dates.
Thanks for your help0 -
When you buy a policy in advance there is usually a note somewhere in the welcome email or letter about informing them of any changes like accidents, occupation changes etc that occur between purchase date and start date of the policy.
This may cause an issue now that you intend to claim, as it will have to be declared to your new insurance company. Some may just apply an additional premium, especially while the claim is open, but some may go down the route of asking why it wasn't declared and (worse case scenario) voidance for non disclosure.0 -
OP, if you read all of the Ts and Cs I'm sure you'll find that the quote was based on the information you provided, and you had an obligation to advise the insurer of any changes.0

Thank you Jfk & Car,
I understand what you're saying and if there was going to be a claim thru insurance companies I would have definitely informed them.
At the time and up until I received an email from the third party this morning, they were going to pay me £260 to cover the damage but they are now messing me around. So the problem is that too much time has gone since the accident.
I didn't feel it necessary to tell the insurance companies but it's all got a bit messy now and I'm feeling stressed because i don't like doing anything wrong.0
