Mortgage lender asked for marriage certificate?

Hi all,
I’m largely asking out of curiosity- but we applied for a mortgage with NatWest via a mortgage broker on Friday, today we’ve been asked to supply our marriage certificate. Our broker seemed a bit surprised and asked them why but didn’t really get an answer.
Our current house/mortgage is just in his name - due to us being a bit naïve when we bought 10 years ago. I guess this has something to do with it, but why does it matter to them if we’re married or not?
I have obviously supplied them with the certificate so it’s no bother… just interested if anyone else has had this?
