Ex partner has tax bill

My ex partner has a large tax bill due to my son receiving child benefit when we lived together.
I spoke to hmrc when I had our daughter and realised then, so opted out for both children. But there was around 12mths where we lived together and I was still receiving child benefit for my son.
I understand that ex should have done self assessment or I should have opted out on the benefit.
My ex has ignored this bill for a long time - maybe 2 years. So it has obviously grown in size!
He now says that I should pay the bill as it was my child receiving.
Should I contact hmrc and try to speak to them about it? Will they expect me to pay the bill? All of the letters are addressed to him only, I have never received a bill
Thank you

Did you have more income than him?sarahpep said:My ex partner has a large tax bill due to my son receiving child benefit when we lived together.

Does the period the charge (High Income Child Benefit Charge) relate just to the period when you were living together?1 -
No my income was not larger than his, he was on nearly 60k. When he moved in with me and my son I informed the council and tax credits abd all other bebefits stopped. I seriously didn't think about checking the child benefit received for my son.
And yes I believe it does but he hasn't showed me much of the correspondence so cant check dates etc.0 -
The person with the net adjusted income over £50.000 gets the bill.
HMRC will pursue your ex partner for payment.
Any arrangement for you to pay it is an arrangement between the two of you.1
