How do you actually look for a job these days?

Options
The last time I went job-hunting was back in 1984 - went to the Job Centre, saw an ad, got an interview sorted and am still here...
I am looking at retiring in a couple of years but still feel the need to work a bit, just not what I am doing now. But I have no idea how things work these days when looking for work - I have no real idea as to what I would like to do but am very open minded - it is not so much about money it is more about keeping busy a couple of days a week in something that is active. Having thought about it a lot I think my ideal job would be something like an Amazon warehouse as I genuinely like being on my feet all day rushing around, and where I work we haven't had meal-breaks for years - unfortunately there isn't one nearby...

So, any tips on where to look? Arte there still things as 'Job Centers' where you can look at loads of different vacancies or is it all online?

The Indeed app is very good for job searching as employers have to pay to put jobs on there.

In terms of Amazon, their UK jobs can be found here Fulfilment & Operations | Amazon.jobs

There are still job centres although I think now the jobs are on an online portal ratehr than a physical board.
There are still lots of recruitment agencies (and local ones will often still have physical offices and adverts as well as these being posted online)

There are online job boards - indeed is probably the biggest and best known, and lets employers post directly (so doesn't automatically mean that they pay huge agencies fees)

Bear in mind that agencies typically charge the employer fees based on a % of the annual salary for the job -25% isn't uncommon, so if you know the type of job you want it is worth looking directly  - e.g. on the website for the company itself, beforeyou use an agency, as (where they are recruiting directly as well as via agencies) applying direct can mean that it is less expensive for them to takeyou on, which can give them more space to negotiate on salary!

Depending in the type of job, personal recommendation can work too.

Larger companies will have their own proceedures and may require you to apply online. (since you mentioed amazon, they have a specifc website which is called something like jobsatamazon, for instance.

  • It depends on the industry. In my industry (Marketing), it's all about recruiters, job sites and LinkedIn.
For something like warehouse work that you mentioned OP, it could be more a case of finding out which firms operate in your location and looking on individual websites or online jobs boards for postings by those employers.
  • Networking is a useful tool to tap into, let it be known what your looking for.

When I was on jobseekers last year for a few weeks, the job centre pretty much just sent a list of links to various job sites or companies.

Many big companies do have their own sites and also advertise on Indeed etc, some only on their own sites.  Some jobs on Indeed don't really exist if you look on their own sites.  Cutting and pasting and inaccuracies are rife.  The only common thread is that it's all online really.
  • In this digital age most companies post their job openings their website while most jobs there are lots of job openings on sites like ziprecruiter, toptotal, linkedln ect sometimes you could see them on social media.
