Hello, I am wondering if anyone can offer me any advice. I have read through many other posts regarding these loans but i'm still unsure where I stand.
I have 3 student loans originally taken out with Student Loans Company in 96,97,98. In 2008 2 of the loans were taken over by Thesis Servicing Ltd. every year deferment forms are sent to me by Student Loans company and every year I return them as I have never earned above the threshold. I believe Erudio took over the 3rd loan sometime in 2014 although I don't recall being notified of this other than seeing there details on my deferment forms.

On May 18th Erudio wrote to me advising they had terminated my agreement due to arrears and I would need to pay £1700 in the next 7 days. They claim they had written to me at some point in April giving me the opportunity to clear £269 arrears from 2014 and claim I hadn't deferred this year so added a couple of months extra on top. I did not receive any letter in April.

Just a side note regarding 2014 arrears they wrote to me at some point in 2015 claiming I had not deferred with them in 2014 and despite trying numerous times to dispute this with them they refused to acknowledge any deferral. They have sent me a statement every year showing the arrears but have never demanded I pay it so rightly or wrongly I haven't.

Anyway I returned this years deferment documents back in Feb (deferment didn't end until March) and have received nothing from them until this termination letter. I emailed immediately asking for an explanation and a copy of the letter they apparently sent along with the opportunity to pay the arrears requested in the alleged letter. I also enclosed proof of my earnings. They have responded today advising SLC would have to confirm status of my paperwork and they have requested I complete an income and expenditure form so they can set up a payment plan!

I have contacted SLC who despite putting me on hold a while so they could check out my account they refused to give me any information other than details to log on to their online account service.

So.. (apologies I know this is lengthy)   I have logged on to my online account with SLC ( who I still send my proof of earnings to for all 3 loans) which shows they have received my documents relating to the Thesis loans this year but they have not logged any for Erudio. I have posted these again to SLC today in the hope they will back date them. I also checked back at 2014. It seems as this was during Erudio's takeover I was sent 2 sets of deferment letter 1 had all 3 loan numbers 1 only had 2 They have confirmed acceptance of the 2 thesis loans but not Erudio. I guess my point is, I have sent proof of my earnings every year to SLC they have them logged on my account. Do I have any case for a complaint in that they can clearly see I was eligible?

They have also sent me a letter this week charging me £20 for a default letter that was apparently sent to me in 2013! I have no idea why.

Any help would be gratefully received

  • Hi 👋
I have a remarkably similar story re erudio. And to add to the confusion they sent all communication to an old address, and the first I know is a solicitors letter saying I have a ccj against my name.
I’ve successfully deferred loans via slc for years now…but on looking now…can see at some point in 2018 the deferment was only for the honours student loan administered loans, not erudio.
I believed that there was one lead on the loans and that you deferred to one, and the other company then accepted the deferment. I’m sure this is what happened pre 2018. Do you think that was the case? And we weren’t told of this change?
I was not aware this had changed. And they sent all the letters to the wrong address. So never deferred with them specifically.
Now erudio won’t talk to me and solicitor instead is involved.
Like you I don’t think I should have to pay: I’m below the threshold. I want to defer this year again. But it appears it’s all too late

do you have erudio’s email address? I can’t find it

    From what you've written it would appear your loans, or at least the Thesis owned ones, are still administered on their behalf by SLC. But, the parts in bold above;
Exactly what information did you receive regarding Erudio and the loan they purchased?
Did you send both the deferral forms back or just one?

In your position though I think it's worth making an official complaint to both SLC and Erudio to at least try find out what has gone on. If it turns out that Erudio wanted to self manage their loans and that you would have to send deferral notices to Erudio then you should have been told about it. The complaints should reveal whether this notice ever happened or not, the outcome of which will dictate what you can do going forward.
