Forget the Thorntons £5 off offer...

I was going to use the Thorntons offer of £5 off for £15 spent which represents a great discount. Or so I thought! I input all my card details and then it only gives me the option of £5.95 delivery.
The deadline for standard delivery was 14th Dec at £3.50. They tell you that in the small print once you're about to pay and have wasted your time deciding on what box the MIL would enjoy most.
Forget it Thorntons you've just lost my custom. 15% options are still available but after you factor in postage it's not even worth it.
I was only interested because I'm consciously avoiding the pandemonium of shopping malls this Christmas and the £5 off still gave me a little bit of a discount and saving in petrol.

If you look at the delivery information it does state that after the 14th of Dec postage will be £5.95.
The only reason they charge £5.95 instead of the lower priced postage is so that it guarantees you get your order before Christmas, a lot of shops don't even offer this postage option and are not guaranteeing delivery in time for Christmas now, I think it's a good idea you have this option.
Ordering items without Special Delivery this late in December is just asking for items not to be delivered in time for Christmas.Following the Slimming World Plan and Exercising

I have to disagree with you. Whilst I wouldn't expect a boutique to be able to deliver before Christmas without a high delivery charge, I know that many of the larger, well known sites are offering FREE DELIVERY for the customer ordering by Monday 19th December.
It's ridiculous for Thorntons to offer discount codes only for them to be offset by the cost of delivery. If the cost is going to be £5.95 then the discount should be proportionately larger. They must think we're gormless idiots. I'm going to use my Clubcard points to buy Bendicks from Tesco. :rotfl:0 -
Just want to make something else clear regarding Christmas delivery from Thorntons.
1) It does NOT display the fact that it is too late for standard delivery prominently on the home page or product page. You have to check the small delivery charge box on the left side of the page.
2) There is NO option on the payment page for standard delivery and just chancing your luck AT ALL. You pay £5.95 or no order. You cannot remove the £5.95 delivery option.
Hmmm £5.95 delivery vs a £5 discount - what a fantastic deal, I'm quivering with excitement.0 -
Codswallop have you actually complained about this to Thorntons and asked them for an explanation? Maybe they dont realise that this offer could be backfiring on them by losing customers.0

I can't find the code for this one, can someone enlighten me please?0

I have to agree with the OP - its incredibly frustrating when you think you're making a saving with a code only to get to the checkout and they wack on an extortionate amount for postage. And it doesn't just happen around Christmas time.
This in fact happened when I attempted to order something off of the Boaters website - the item was £3.00 (on sale) and postage was £4! I was outraged to be paying more for postage than for the item (and before you ask, it wasn't a large item - it was a couple of small packs of coffee in cardboard - not even glass jars). And they are based in Bedfordshire and I was in London, not even that far. I did in fact email them for an explanation and they just fobbed me off saying they wouldn't change the delivery cost. Result? They lost my custom.
I noticed this ages ago on ebay - sellers hiking up postage costs thinking that buyers wouldn't notice - but for legitimate companies to be doing this is outrageous.0 -
I got the code by having a go on their countdown to Christmas prize draw the details of which were emailed to me. On my very first go I won a £5 off voucher. Funny thing is that every day since then when I have had a go, I haven't won anything - wonder if anyone actually does or if this is just an enticement to get you place another order.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0
