Wrong Tax bill

Greetings. My wife has received an £800 tax bill which might be incorrect ( not too sure hence posting here for advice and opinion). She changed from her Maiden name to marriage name in 2004 and has worked continually as an employee in several businesses over the years, with the different surname, up to present date. She has always paid tax on her wages as seen in her monthly pay slips.
She has now received an £800 unpaid tax bill in her Maiden name - a call to the Tax office stated the unpaid bill comes from the 2018 -2019 financial year. This is strange as she has not used her Maiden name since before 2004 and has not had any problems with tax or anything else over the years until this.
She has been advised to produce her P60 to prove she paid tax over the 2018 - 2019 period or else she'll have to pay the bill. Unfortunately, seeing that P60 is now several years old, its nowhere to be found, and it will be in her married surname not the surname with the debt against it.
The phone call to the Tax office was like pulling teeth and less than supportive.

Can anyone advise the next move here?
Is it a case of paying up if she can't find the P60? Surely the Tax office can look up her account and see on her records she's paid tax over that period?
Have the Tax office cocked up and looked at her Maiden name as a separate person, in which case it's their mistake ????

any advice gratefully received
cheers

Not sure that's even relevant from what you've posted.

What does the actual calculation show?  She could have paid (some) tax and still owe more

You need to provide more detail for anyone to help.

Has she ever applied for Marriage Allowance?

She should look at her personal tax account online as it will include HMRC's data for 2018/19.

I think HMRC would consider the NI number as a more important identifyier than surname, as the former is (or at least should be) unique to an individual and, unlike name, remain unchanged throughout a persons lifetime.
