I've always had desktop PCs for gaming, but will shortly be going traveling and will be buying a gaming laptop and am considering what to purchase. The key considerations are:
  • Laptop will be constantly on the move, usually in a daypack
  • Games played will be more strategic, eg, Football Manager, and possibly (though unlikely) MMORPG, there will be no first-person shooter type-games.
  • I'll use the laptop for editing and uploading short YouTube footage from a GoPro, probably 10 minutes twice a week as part of a travel diary.
  • I'll also use laptop to watch TV/video - I'd expect this to almost always be on the laptop screen.
  • I'll have a wireless mouse but no other peripherals
  • I should have daily access to power as mostly staying at AirBnbs, and will have a decent powerpack with me so am not particularly concerned with battery life
  • I'll be using it on buses, lying on bed, etc, so would prefer not to have something that will put out huge amounts of heat.
  • The laptop will be used for about 2 years of travel, and then probably about a year after returning in a conventional residential set-up in the UK.
I am thinking about an Asus Tuf laptop, something like the link, my thinking is:
  • I very much value the robustness of this laptop given it will be constantly on the move
  • It is probably higher spec than I need being an Intel I7, 16G RAM, RTX 3060, but I'm not very price sensitive and I'd be spending £700+ anyway on a lower spec laptop so this isn't that much more. There is an element of future-proofing here, as I won't be upgrading the laptop during its life.
  • I'd prefer a larger screen, but I've not seen anything particularly attractive
  • It doesn't have a webcam, but I wouldn't use a webcam for gaming, and will have a phone for anything I might want to use video for
  • For reference, my current set-up is about 2.5 years old, and is a desktop, Ryzen 5 2600X, 6 cores, 12 threads, 8G DDR4 RAM, GTX 1650 so isn't anything special and still meets all my requirements.
Grateful if anyone can see any glaring issues with what I've said above, especially as I have never had a gaming laptop previously. Thanks.

My first thought is that is heavy, the laptop and charger combined weigh 3kg, gaming laptops are usually not particularly resilient, that laptop is not particularly robust, "Tuf" does not mean "tough", as in toughbook, depending on how and where you are travelling that might not be ideal. The size and perceived value may also make you a target for theft.

If it is largely for Football Manager just get the phone or tablet version. If you are just doing basic editing then doing that on a phone or tablet is also more than adequate. I might possibly consider a Steam Deck instead, lugging that around tow two years would be far more practical.
  • My only advice is as long as you know that you are paying for convenience over function then you will be ok. your laptops 3060 is not going to perform the same way a desktop 3060 is going to perform, your AMD or Intel Processor is not going to perform the same as a desktop processor. you are forking out £700  just for gaming convenience

I have had 3 gaming laptops Omen, Predetor and Alienware, they all weighed a ton i think 3kg combined is putting it nicely, i reckon its closer to 5 but then again mine is older now.

Now onto the laptop itself, If you want to future proof yourself then obviously get something that has a 3060+ and 16gb is fine but if you can get more Ram do it cause 16 is now the new baseline. FM23 is light and requires almost nothing to play, so unless you are playing MMORPG like amazons New World then you could probably drop it to a 2070 with 10gen i7  thats on a clearence sale.

Final point: If you make a decision not to play anything but Football manager, save yourself the money and just get a normal laptop. The battery will last longer and you dont need to worry about to much heat.

I cant share links because im to new but the HP victus is £799 from HP and seems like a decent all rounder if you did want to pick up a MMORPG

I’ve just got a steam deck and it’s amazing

such a a huge library of games on steam but they all cost like 9.99 each

is there a way to get them cheaper or just play free?

can you share games on a steam account the way some share Netflix?
