Please recommend hybrid

Hi I’ve got £400 to spend on a womens hybrid through the cycle2work scheme. Local bike shop no longer deals with them. Can anyone please recommend a hybrid? Very confused reading reviews, is it a case of the lighter the bike the better? Thanks for reading

  • Lighter bikes (to a degree) are less of a worry these days vs things like aerodynamics, comfort (e.g. disc brakes allowing wider tyres) and all round capability. Obviously you will have to push / carry whatever bike weight you can get but I wouldn't really care about women's bikes vs unisex ones.

I haven't checked the below if you can use cycle2work so please check.

If you can push the budget, the Triban RC500 disc at £650 from Decathlon is a sound bike, 10.5kg, good range of gears and mounts for pannier / mudguards.

Giant Escape 3 £479 at Tredz is 11kg, good range of easy gears and again panniers and mudguard support, 11kg

Specialized Sirrus at CycleStore £474.05 around 12kg, rim brakes but still has 32mm tyres, 7 speed gears but decent range and has mounts

If you want a womens' bike specifically see the list here: https://www.cyclingweekly.com/group-tests/best-womens-hybrid-bikes-461298 - couple of suggestions:

Evans' own brand range PINNACLE LITHIUM 3 WOMEN’S HYBRID BIKE is £550 or the CANNONDALE QUICK WOMEN'S 4 HYBRID BIKE at £649
  • Thanks for your reply I’ll have a look at those 😊

I got a Pinnacle Neon for less than £300 - specifically because a) it's fairly light (around 11kgs) and b) I could use my cycle scheme vouchers with Evans and c) they delivered to my house for free. I'm still happily riding it around London after 3 years with only one service check!

Well done! What lock did you buy?

You'd largely not need servicing on the bike provided you can do basic maintenance yourself such as changing brake pads, cleaning and oiling the cassette/chain and indexing gears all of which you can learn on tutorials from the likes of GCN, Park Tools etc
