Hiking & GPS (cycle) computers

Looking to start doing more hiking. Went out at the weekend to a location found on AllTrails & did the route.
Navigated using my phone for mapping which obviously isn't ideal due to battery life even if the map itself is quite nice to look at.
I wondered about getting hike routes in something like .gpx format and then syncing it to my Wahoo cycle computer. Ok the mapping wont be as good/detailed as the phone but the battery life is infinitely better. If we really came unstuck then I guess we could revert to the phone.
Only thing is I see things like AllTrails requiring paid membership which I don't want to do. Especially when I think these things ask for too much money anyway.
I could check out some routes I suppose and manually map them myself, trying to replicate as best as I can in Strava perhaps but that's a bit of a ballache.
So just wondering how best & preferably free, to get some routes on to the cycle computer. We needed the mapping this weekend gone by as we ended up detouring off route 3 or 4 times, one of which would've ended us up wildly off course if we'd have continued whereas the other few weren't too bad.
