Buying share of freehold does the mortgage provider need to know!

Does my mortgage provider need to know that I want to buy the freehold?
I called Halifax and requested to start the process of a mortgage extension in order to purchase the freehold, I estimated about £15K for my share
Thats not much and thought nothing of it, fill out a few forms and boom 'heres your money sir'
However the chap said that he thinks they won't be able to help us out, that it changes the contract and that it puts them in a dangerous position legally speaking.
Did i just get a guy who doesn't know what he's talking about? Surely banks give extensions and loans for people to purchase freeholds everyday!
Even if i had the cash to do it myself, It didn't even occur to me that you would need to tell Halifax.
Would love to hear some of your input!
I can give additional information if needed

I think the person on the phone probably misunderstood.
Interestingly, if you go to the Halifax site that brokers use to ask questions about Halifax's lending criteria - and you type in "Share of Freehold" - the system replies with "We do not lend on freehold flats....". (Which is a very misleading / irrelevant answer.)
It's here: https://www.halifax-intermediaries.co.uk/criteria/mortgage/default.aspx
Maybe the person on the phone was accessing a system that used the same question/answer database - and typed in "Share of Freehold" and was given the same misleading / irrelevant information.
