Oil Diffuser or alternative

Hi all 

I been thinking about getting diffuser but wondering someone can help answer few questions 

Are plastic diffuser safe ? Been reading mix things about it online not sure how accurate 

Is there a particular requirement for a diffuser or can just buy any ? E.g some warm the oil before spray others use ultrasonic 

Splashing or spray oil on the bed compared to diffuser be just as effective?

I purchased a load of Wax Lyrical reed diffusers but I cannot smell them for the love of me!  The only way I can smell the scent is if I add them to the oil /tealight burner and diluting the liquid.

So are you burning the oils ? If so isn't that supposed decrease the effectiveness
