I've noticed recently that supermarkets seem to be pricing more fruit and veg these days by individual item rather than weight (e.g. red peppers, baking potatoes, sometimes apples and bananas)

    Not something I've seen yet.

People like the certainty of knowing how much they'll have to pay.  A lot of us don't have a concept of how many grams a pepper weighs, for example.  I like loose produce in shops that have electronic scales (e.g. supermarkets with the scan & go handsets) as you can buy the exact amount you want and find out the price in advance - but I don't like waiting until I get to the checkout to find out how much I'll have to pay.

Aldi and Lidl have been selling red peppers singly for a while now (42p each last time I looked). And our local big co-op charges 40p for a large baking potato.
I rarely shop in Sainsbury but looking at their online lists you can buy single conference pears for 40p each, and Royal Gala or Braeburn apples priced at 30p each as well as the more usual individual items of oranges, lemons, limes and mangoes.

Cant see it being illegal, supermarkets sell boxes of fruit and veg with no indication of weight.  If customers think it’s not a bargain then they don’t have to buy it.
All supermarkets I use have weight labels on their fruit and veg. If the fruit or veg is loose, there are usually scales so that customers can weigh their own and stick a label on the produce themselves.

I buy loads of fruit and veg at Tesco without a weight.
Pack of three peppers, pack of six apples, one single bulb of garlic, pack of three onions. None of those have a weight on them.

How can it be a scam? They're selling you a type of fruit / veg for a price per bowl, you're getting that bowl of whatever for a price you agree to pay

It doesn't matter if dave on the next stall will sell you a pound of peppers for a quid instead of a bowl of 4 for a quid that you bought.
It could be a scam if they put a few nice ones at the top of the bowl and the ones at the bottom are rotten or if it were a few nice fruit at the top and a bowl of pebbles underneath.

Have seen the former happen but most the cases its just really an upsell technique rather than a scam... you wanted 4 pieces of fruit for 60p but end up getting 8 pieces for £1. You've saved on a per piece basis but bought more than you wanted.

Traders at Rye Market often sell by the bowl. The disadvantage is that you can't see the quality of the fruit or veg beyond the top few. In fact, I think market traders shouldn't be allowed to pick your fruit or veg. In France, you can choose your own. I don't use British markets.

They will do anything that will make them more money!
True... But there reasoning behind it is it's less plastic "which it is" but still doesn't justify that massive inflation..

Less is more... In this day and age
