POWER NI PREPAY

Can anyone confirm for me... with increase coming up in July if I top up extra in preparation meter will get this at all at current rate as long as once rate changes in July I don't top up with new topup and long numbers to change rate until any money in meter used.

Hope this makes sense lol

I have a pre pay meter for gas, and it certainly works (and pays) to top up before a price hike. From past posts about electric meters, it looks like it will work for electric also. Anyway, if it doesn’t, what have you lost?

I did this with electric ireland and sse gas and it worked for both. EI  also started issuing the long number about a week or so before the actual increase so maybe check if there is anything on your provider’s website about what date the long numbers will be issued from and top up before then.

Sorry don’t know how to edit. Just checked my letter from Electric Ireland and it says price increase from 1/5/22 but that first top up after 21/4/22 would have the long number. Max EI meter holds is £1000 but I only found that out by phoning them

    Hi Desperadoo,
I am in the same boat as yourself, I'm with Power Ni, Keypad+ meter, I have checked with Consumer line NI, and they could see no reason why not to top up as much as possible before 14th June, the only thing they said if your meter was to go faulty, then Power Ni, would have to replace the Meter, and you would only get back the money loaded on the Meter and it would be at the new rate, he also said to take a photo with your phone of actual meter reading on the date you Top Up, and the amount on the Meter in case there is any dispute with Power Ni.
But I'm like yourself, I will be definitely Topping Up before the 14th June, as much as I can possibly afford (with all other price increases) hopefully this helps you.

  • Curious how you guys are getting on with ur pre loaded meters?  I did the same in May and have a good amount of credit remaining . Enough to carry me into the new year as my rate is still 22p. I am worried though that if the government issue the £400 by a electricity voucher,  my tariff will adjust when entering it therefore losing my 22p tariff.

chances are the voucher won't be issued until after the new year. Then there will be time allowance to exchange the voucher at the shops to the codes. Run down your credit to the last minute before code expiry.

Yea that is the plan.  All the same Its a shame it will take so long to be issued as I am sure many people could do with it immediately.  Also,  I'm sure people would like the option of using it towards oil heating too. For me oil costs are maybe more than double my electricity spend per year.

I do this - I am actually still two rates back, with 2 credits (1 long code & 1 short) to apply from 1 rate back.  Need to check meter, but fairly sure I am significantly better off than with this Gov. rebated rate PNI are shouting about!  I have held the codes a fair while before crediting to the meter in the past (think best part of a year) - I save the emails in my 'important' folder & also pop them in a WhatsApp message to the wife with 'electric top up', then either of us can search the chat when needed.

The £400 thing is annoying me on 2 fronts - if Belfast Live are right, you have to do 3 top ups, getting an extra £170 on the first two & £60 on third...

I already have credit on meter & more to add - can't I just have my £400?

Also if I top up £5 & get £170 extra, what about my £4 bonus for topping up £150 plus?  I don't want to have to buy 3 £150 top ups, which would be £862 with the £400 & 3 £4 extras - thankfully I don't need that much!
