Easyjet new luggage policy - are they very strict?

Hi, we're flying Edinburgh to Nice  next week.  Normally take hand luggage for overhead storage but they've now changed it to 45cmx30x20 (ie the size of a small backpack) & needs to fit under seat in front.
It's doable, just need to wash stuff when there, however I've got a soft holdall which I'd prefer over a backpack, but it's 50cm length.  I'm concerned they may have the luggage police at airports now.  Has anyone had any bother this year over the minutiae of luggage?

Nobody even looked towards my carry on bag last week - it was just about on size maybe slightly over - I had lots of books in it, if any queries I would have taken some of the books out.

Not always strict but they can be - that's the whole purpose of the rules

Next week when it's school hols (at least in England) and going to a popular holiday destination the chances are people will be trying their luck - if enough of them do then you risk the additional charges

It's a gamble to which no-one can give you an answer

Just back from holidays and although I did take the restricted backpack, I could have taken hand luggage as the flight wasn't full but of course don't know that until you get there.  Actually Easyjet have done me a favour as I now realise how little you need to take, so long as you have access to a sink, soap, somewhere to dry your stuff & an iron, as I washed stuff each night and they were dry before going to bed.
