Lost endowment on repossed home

Hello was in a violent marriage had to leave my home with mortgage. Abuser stayed never pd mortgage going back now to 1984 had endowment on the property. I had to go to safe house could not go back house was repossessed question has enough time lapsed for me to safely see if this is worth anything or will he have to be tracked too. Or
If I apply for it do I have to trace him to give him half or will I get chased by the old mortgage company for the shortfall.
