Getting the SEG!!!

I am almost now at the point where I will be the proud owner - when the DNO get round to it - of a G99 form entitling me to apply for the SEG tariff. However. My dad has been trying to do this with Octopus recently and had the devil of a time (they seem unable to understand that he is not trying to change supplier and keep rejecting his application on the grounds he couldn't get the higher 7.5p rate. He doesn't even want that, he just wants their ordinary 4.1p SEG). So I thought I would start a post to ask for tips and tricks for getting the SEG tariff. It seems that these days institutions like these, even though they are private companies, are administratively on their knees and unwilling or unable to process even their own admin as they intend.

Any tips regarding typical SEG energy suppliers? Their forms? How to get them to read things you send them? Their promptness with paying? Issues they raise regarding G98/99? Things I 'should' be saying regarding smart meter details/mpan?

I had some challenges with Octopus; it took nearly 4 weeks from when I submitted an application and involved chasing via email and phone calls. Fortunately, that was in Feb/March when I wasn't generating a lot of excess. I know they are extremely busy, and setting up someone for SEG is probably very low on their priority list, but they really ought to make the whole process a lot more automated.

I first went to Octopus as SEG only, applied on 15th March 22 and was paid from 5th April, had no problems with it. Didn't think the timescale was too bad.

I now have my gas and electricity supply with them and they switched me to Agile Outgoing from the 4.1p tariff on the day my supply transfer completed from Scottish Power.

Thanks for this, people. Much appreciated. I assume, Alnat1, you are using a battery and feeding back to the grid with that agile tarrif. My dream as I do not have a battery would be to transfer to octopus for my energy and go on their 7.5p SEG.

You don't need a battery for outgoing agile, you're just at the mercy of the half hourly pricing and generation at that particular time.

I've just applied last week for octopus outgoing agile, I'm already with them for gas / electric, I'm really hoping they don't take too long it's horrible seeing all the excess energy I'm generating being fed back to the grid and getting nothing in return.

That was me a few weeks ago. I was washing the washing machine (doing a 90C cleaning run) and telling hubby to mow lawn/vacuum car etc. trying to use as much as possible.

Now we try and run all the appliances early in the day so we can be exporting as much as possible at the later peak rates.

I hope in a few months I'll calm down and stop obsessing about it

  • I wondered if there is a time limit for energy companies to process SEG applications?  Its over 10 weeks since i submitted my application with all the requested information, but have received only one (I assume) automated message saying 'We are sorry for any delay in responding, we are receiving a high number of emails and applications currently.'.  Thats it!  This is with the dreaded EON-Next!  Can it really be allowed that they take my electricity for free, for as long as they like .. because 'they are busy', and yet still manage to have enough staff to continue charging me the earth for their electricity and standing charges?

    My story
    Solar installed Jan 2022
    Batteries installed May 2022
MCS, DNO and commissioning documents Aug 2022 (had problems with Givenergy inverter and took a while to sort out).
SEG to Octopus submitted on 12th August 2022 and still waiting.

I suspect the delay in getting  Export MPAN from UK Power Networks might be adding to this.
I have exported over 2MW for free to the grid and had to submit a picture of the export reading when the form was submitted.  I was daft to not have taken a picture of export from the smart meter when the solar was installed  :#
