Yes you can just fit optimisers to panels that get shaded.

Going back to my original question, does anyone know if you can just fit optimisers to panels that are likely to be shaded ...
    Yes you can.
... or is it a false economy and best to fit to all 14 panels?
I don't really see the point of optimising unshaded panels.

I was persuaded to fit optimisers and now I rather regret it.  My panels are only shaded on winters' mornings and I'm not convinced that the small amount of extra generation I achieve will ever pay-back the cost of the optimisers.

You can use these just on the panels that get shading.

We have optimisers on all of our 32 panels, mainly because we get shading, at different times of the year, from various trees on neighbouring land, but also because all the PV panels have a tolerance of + or - 5-10%. Therefore, without optimisers, each string is limited to the worst performing panel in that string. The ability to monitor each panel is also useful.
However, I have seen it suggested, that if you have the roof space, add an extra couple of panels (which can be cheaper than fitting optimisers) and you get the same equivalent benefit of a higher output.
