Switching from mortgage broker to direct application

I currently have an offer accepted on a property. I have passed on solicitor details, that were given by the mortgage broker (they do an all in one service), to the vendor's estate agent. However, I haven't yet had any contact with solicitors - currently at the stage of finding a mortgage.

The mortgage broker quoted a mortgage product for me. However, I have also had an AIP for a (better) mortgage by going directly to a lender.

If I would like to switch over and organise the mortgage directly - at which stage should I tell the broker? Before, or after making a full application?

And in terms of solicitors - when/how should I let the broker know about this, so we can get a new solicitor independently?
