    I think the idea of an undersized inverter is they work more efficiently the closer to there max power. Also I think they startup at lower light levels. I’m no expert just what Google says.
    8kw system spread over 6 roofs , surrounded by trees and in a valley.

    I have an inverter that limits the export in software.  On a sunny day I can run the immersion heater (3 kW) and charge my battery with the remaining <1.8 kW.  I really don't understand why all inverters are not configured this way.

    Assuming of course you have somewhere to dump excess. 

    Probably better if possible not to have your export limited.

    You mean with a 3.68 kW inverter receiving more than 3.68 kW of solar power?
