So I am paid monthly, my last day in my old job was 1st April.

I have been sent a P45 showing my leaving date as 1st April and my total year to date pay being the pay for 1 day, 1st April.

Seems to me as my leaving date was in the 21/22 tax year as before the 5th April then the P45 should show my earnings in the 21/22 tax year?

Plus not sure of the status of the 1st April pay as I did not get it until the end of April as part of the normal monthly salary run.

Any thoughts?
I think....

The payroll was run and you were paid in the 22/23 tax year.

That's the sort of thing that thoroughly confuses HMRC!

I presume you mean you were just paid at the end of April, i.e. in the 2022:23 tax year.

So your P45 shows the correct total pay and tax for the tax year you received the final payment in.  But for whatever reason your employer has reported a leaving date in a different tax year 🤔

Both correct. Payroll was in 22/23 but leaving date is in 21/22.

I think you have misread that.  The P45  only shows  1 day pay for 1 April paid in 22/23.

  • AIUI the P45 would show something like this,

    DOL 01/04/2022

    Pay £100
    Tax £0.00

Which is confusing as the DOL is from one tax year (2021:22) whilst the pay is relating to a payment made in 2022:23.

The Real Time Information report will no doubt show up in 2022:23 in the ops Personal Tax Account but that doesn't stop the P45 from being confusing.
