Civil Service Pension - Combining Service

Help!

I have two civil service pensions.  One is a classic pension with 17 years service and a final salary of  40k.  I then left the civil service pension scheme for 5 years and then rejoined with Alpha with 8 years in there and a current salary of 70k.  I've been told that at the point of retirement I can combine my service.

Let's say I retire in 10 years that would give me:

Classic x 17years
Alpha x 18 years

If I can combine the two then I'd have 35 years... Can this be done?

If so, how do they manage one scheme being final salary and the other being average salary?

Thanks

What were the exact dates of service and the break in service? It is important, as what happens depends on the length of the gap in service (and whether it was more or less than 5 years), but also whether you are eligible for 2015 Remedy.
