Can you pay stamp duty after completion?

Can stamp duty be paid to HMRC directly after completion of house purchase or is it compulsory to pay it through solicitor?

My mortgage lender as offered us the mortgage which is slightly less than we required.

I can sell a car worse case to fund the stamp duty, but wanted some extra time, and sell it as a last resort..

No. SDLT has to be paid in advance to solicitor where a mortgage is required.

The thirty day grace period is for cash purchases only.

You can use children's savings I believe, as long as its not in a trust etc - if you share the bank account which for small children you will, then its technically yours.
As long as you can prove how you got the money, i.e a car sale receipt it will be fine.
