in Cutting tax
Hi!
I used to work in a shop 16 hours at £5.70 and so didn't pay tax.
From March-Oct this year I had a different job and earned approx £7700 during this time which I paid tax and NI on.
I didn't like this job so returned to my old one, on the same hours but at £5.90.
The 3 payslips I have had so far I have been taxed, which is fair enough as I earned over the limit in the tax year. But my tax code is BR W1/M1 and I am wondering if I am being taxed too much?
For example this month= 64 hours at 35.90=£377.60. I was taxed £82.94 and didn't pay and NI. (interestingly last month on the same hours I paid NI)
If I fill in a p46? will I remain on this tax code? Is the amount about right?
Also will they automatically know in April not to tax me for the next year as this job will be my only income for that year?
Thanks
Sarah

BR means Basic Rate so yes you are being taxed too much as you are being given no tax-free allowances. If I fill in a p46? will I remain on this tax code?
Did you not get a P45 when you left the other job? You should have done and should have handed that in to your new employer. If you have no P45 then yes fill in a P46. After that you will be probably be put on the normal tax code of 522L. Once that happens any rebate you may be due will be paid back to you.Is the amount about right?
No you shouldn't have paid any tax on that amount. Also will they automatically know in April not to tax me for the next year as this job will be my only income for that year?
You need to hand in your P45 or fill in P46. Then you will be on the correct code and will not pay tax assuming your income is below the personal allowance.0
