Sigh ... Häagen-Dazs price rise & size reduction masked by temporary price reduction

I still remember the good old days when Ice cream tubs were typically 500ML in size
Some time ago the tub size decreased to 460ML.
And so here I was in my local Tesco this morning and noticed that all the Häagen-Dazs tubs were reduced to £3.00 (for Clubcard holders) from £4.80.
Knowing the typical Supermarket shenanighans I smelled a rat. My eyes also appeared to be deceiving me as the tub size seemed smaller.
Sadly my impression was not an optical illusion or poor eyesight as the tub size is now 420ML
So once the price reduction is removed, a 420ML tub will cost £4.80. This is taking the proverbial even by Häagen-Dazs standards.
Yes...Yes.. War in Ukraine, Brexit, green taxes, global warming ..yada...yada..yada... I know.
I think I'll be investing in an ice cream maker.

All trivial issues compared to your need for affordable Häagen-Dazs, I'm sure.trust.no.1 said:I still remember the good old days when Ice cream tubs were typically 500ML in size

It's OK to think about ice-cream as well as contemplate the larger issues of life.Indeed arguably the availability of raw materials, energy costs, and corporate greed are some of those larger issues which are encapsulated in the price of a tub of ice-cream.Shrinkflation really annoys me; it's like the manufacturer is looking straight at me and lying to my face. The most blatant one was Toblerone, some years back, but there's a lot of it going on.Another more subtle example of it is where they reduce particular ingredients; in particular I've had packets of cereals whose contents seem to be somewhat lacking compared to the picture on the box.I simply tend to not buy the product anymore; I typically don't need that particular one and can look at something else instead.Back to tubs of ice-cream; that's something I may occasionally buy, instead of always having some in the freezer.

I buy handmade ice cream from an independent shop, just under £7 for 1L, just under £14 for 2L tub, the height of indulgence on payday, but so much nicer than mass-produced HD and other 'big' brands.
Shrinking produce, but price remaining the same, has been going on for decades. As said above, vote with your feet and pick an alternative, there's a vast choice compared to when I was a kid and I'm not even 50.Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.0 -

As said above, vote with your feet and pick an alternative, there's a vast choice compared to when I was a kid and I'm not even 50.Unfortunately it is even worse in this case as I've just realised that HD has raised the price AND reduced the size of the product in one fell swoop
. No wonder this is being introduced under the guise of a temporary price reduction. As far as ice cream is concerned - HD in my opinion is the best of the lot as it appears to use purely organic ingredients and tastes way better than the competition. Still it has always been ridiculously overpriced IMHO and i only ever buy it when it is on sale. I doubt I'll be purchasing going forward tnow, hence my considering an ice cream maker.Yes - my outrage at the latest HD price rises pales in comparison to the issues I've mentioned (I forgot to add Covid..). But surely the board does not begrudge me an affordable tub of ice cream to drown my sorrows at these Global issues?

I don't, and even if I did it matters not one jot. You caught me at a tetchy time - had heard someone moaning about the shortage of cooking oil and alluding to how badly it was going to affect their life with a massive sense of entitlement and no regard for the mass suffering of others a few minutes prior.trust.no.1 said:MovingForwards said:I buy handmade ice cream from an independent shop, just under £7 for 1L, just under £14 for 2L tub, the height of indulgence on payday, but so much nicer than mass-produced HD and other 'big' brands.

£3 for a 420ML tub is good value. What's there to complain about? Price inflation is everywhere. No one is taking the p***. Adapt or die one might say. The fun has barely begun.2 -
I've been buying rapeseed oil for a long time, looks like the price and demand for that will be going up, can be used like extra virgin but also has a high smoke point, bonus is less carbon footprint.Rosa_Damascena said:I don't, and even if I did it matters not one jot. But you're not going to let it destroy you, are you? The way this chap was carrying on you'd think the sky was about to cave in.sammyjammy said:

Last time I bought Carte D'or ice cream I noticed the texture had changed, more 'airy' as if they had pumped more air into it to save on costs. Maybe it was just my imagination but it definitely tasted different to the last time I had it, which was quite a while ago. Anyway, I switched to Lidl's version which tasted more like the original.1

And that's the way to deal with manufacturers playing you for a fool - stop buying the product and go elsewhere.
